The aristocratic glamour of the Eastern European jet set strikes back in Dori Tomcsanyi’s AW16 collection. The tile inspired prints and exotic color combinations are highlighted by Saskia Boer’s documentary of Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan.
Growing up in post-socialist Hungary, designer Dori Tomcsanyi draws from childhood memories of happy days in the Eastern Bloc, but that retrospective aesthetics is strongly mixed with high-end fashion and top-notch minimalism. Iconic features of womenswear of the bygone days of Eastern Europe come back now more than ever to be recontextualized in a modern frame with minimal shapes and sharp tailoring. In the 2016/17 Autumn-Winter season you’ll meet Dori’s favourite silhouettes, such as the tight high shift dresses or the 70’s inspired lush hippie print dresses, completing the look with sharp edges and fitted jackets.
Saskia Boer’s photo series ‘Wings of the People’ looks at the role of tradition and the cultural heritage of horse games in Kyrgyz society. The young and mountainous country of Kyrgyzstan has an unlikely blend of nomadic spiritism, moderate Islam and Soviet communism culture. Amidst its social and political issues after gaining its independence from the USSR, Kyrgyz people search for common heritage to unite different ethnicities into one nation, (re)defining its identity as a country. As such, they revalue old traditions like the popular horse game ‘Kok Boru’. Boer travelled around the country to document this young country and its strong connection to horses. Since the price of imported petrol is so high, these horses are the 'Wings of the People'.
