Juxtaposing Lines

Verena Schepperheyn x Hayley Rheagan

Inspired by Verena Schepperheyn's Spring/Summer 2016 collection ‘Juxtaposing Lines’, photographer Hayley Rheagan created a photo series dedicated to the collection. Urban architecture is abstracted with her signature style of creating new dimensionality and space. Both artists transform everyday patterns into vibrant yet calming visuals.

Verena Schepperheyn‘s Spring/Summer 2016 collection introduces the designer’s desire for textile manipulation, showcasing her particular approach to masculinity. Every pieces uniqueness is endowed by putting a special focus on color, embroidery, print and detail. Opposing streetwear influences and tailoring techniques, there is a merge of classical menswear tradition with contemporary masculine ideals.

The Berlin based designer’s work follows the Japanese ‘Wabi Sabi’ concept of impermanence, explored in an early stage while working on her Master Graduate Collection ‘All this in its place for now’. Following the idea of showing a certain stage of a process in every collection, this season is a reinterpretation and evolution of past conceptual elements and shapes.

Major references are the work of the German Bauhaus associated artist Oskar Schlemmer, who was plotting the human body through clear and pure lines. As well as the work of contemporary artist Navid Nuur, who is dealing with spontaneous material transformation. Taking those as inspiration for creating the textiles and the silhouettes, the new collection frames the male body into lines. From the initial collage process, the layers merged into fragments, assembled by using different techniques such as embroidery, stitching, embellishments and prints.

The collection presents the return of the A-line silhouette in tones of red, white, beige, black and blue alongside a matured textural interest. With materials ranging from light cottons and hand-woven fabrics to sheer neoprene, that work as canvas for the unique surface manipulations following the label’s spirit.
