Studio Mulder x Peter Holliday
In light of Peter's Holliday's series Where the Land Rises, Studio Mulder's collections become a concise study on contrasts in materials, textures and landscapes.
This Dutch design label produces understated and utilitarian men's bags made with durable materials. Together with his studio partner Ratna Ho, Pascal Mulder creates sophisticated alternatives to the plethora of It Bags abounding in fashion outlets. Their sturdy and refined items are available in a variety of materials, from soft shell to mesh. They also come equipped with frontal pockets adorned by stainless steel logos and water repellent zippers. Their sleek and pure lines are boosted by the appeal of their functional virtues. Indeed, Studio Mulder's solid background in product design shows in their offering - their eco-friendly bags are suitable for every occasion.
As Peter Holliday's work considers the ways in which humans bond with the untrodden environments surrounding them, he urges the viewer to meditate on themes such as the passing of time, the density of memory, and the comfort that home can provide. The Scottish photographer is fascinated in exploring the feeling of attachment and the imprint a place can leave on one's subconscious.
In his series, Where the Land Rises, places and objects become haunted and altered in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. There is also a striking contrast between rawness and purity exuding from the tough terrains the artist focuses on. Holliday is indeed very apt when it comes to drawing the beauty out of the most bereft scenery.
The ethereal nature of serenity and bliss is clashing with rough and sharp, a sensation that equals the clear lines and neutral colors of the sleek items provided by Studio Mulder. The brute force of deserted landscapes is redoubling that of earthy undertones. Even more so, it merges with the soft power filtering through the stark materials used in this men’s bag collection. This is an endearing affair for the uncompromising ones – men who are willing to stand out without any fuss. Only focusing on what is necessary, Studio Mulder crafts smart accessories that also happen to be à-propos add-ons for everyday wear. Oh and the technological input of Buitink Technology makes it abundantly clear that these bags are made for lasting.
