Fashion label YUNIT is all about the necessary sustainable basics in life. Connected to photo series of photographer Alba Giertz, where she expresses a sombre aesthetic, we see the core four elements in nature: earth, water, air and fire.
Josine Castelein and Joeri Borst are the founders of YUNIT, together they have turned Yunit into a successful sustainable fashion brand. Their goal is to make universal clothes for everybody - regardless gender, age or skin color. Yunit believes everyone looks good in a t-shirt and for this reason they focus mainly on creating strong basics designs with the right fit and made out of natural materials such as organic cotton. All the clothes are produced in a sustainable way with attention to the people who made them and their work environment.
You could say Yunit is about the basics and foundations in life - about what really matters. The Yunit collection is connected to the photo series of Alba Giertz were the core elements in nature are represented.
Alba Giertz is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm who started photography at the early age of 10 and had her first solo exhibition at 14. Her work is deeply related to her own journey through the storms of life, acting as a tool for emotional release and a means of finding substance in a world that can seem empty and vapid.
In 2011-2015 she took a break from photography following a bout of delusion and depression, but in the summer of 2015 found her way back into the arts - this time choosing a narrower focus in the sub fine art scene. Here, she found herself unapologetically free to express a more sombre aesthetic.
Creativity can act as a channel to ventilate morbid thoughts. And for Alba, the relationship between art and emotion has been symbiotic. Through sharp observations she uniquely unchains transient feelings from time, skilfully mixing enigma with precise realism. By emphasizing imagery with her original writing her output tumbles between being shy and loud, clear and ceaselessly filled with passionate mystery.
