Fashion label studiowinkler’s Fall/Winter 2016/17 collection is a journey into a fantastic world where mystery takes the lead. Fascinated by the mystical element of aether, photographer and physicist Fedor Shklyaruk uses photography as a medium to investigate what may or may not exist.
For this winter, Julia Winkler took inspirations from the fashion drawings of illustrator and friend Tara Dougans. Small details can be found in studiowinkler’s pieces alluding to Tara’s imaginative illustrations, pushing a door into a whole new universe made of reverie and mystery. With high quality fabrics and strong cuts, studiowinkler delivers a collection in which women assume their femininity through a dandy look. The outfits play with the dividing line between reality and fantasy to reveal an elegant yet comfortable style. In combination with the drawings, the songs of Canadian singer and songwriter China-woman also inspired the designer, giving way all together to an experimental collection made of captivating volumes and audacious shapes.
As aether carries the light, Fedor Shklyaruk visualizes his research on this invisible element through photography - the almost scientific art that draws with light. Ancient philosophers believed that the aether was the fifth element, absolute and divine. Chemical transformations take place due to it, and also the sky is such as it is. Because of its nature aether eludes direct observation and it is difficult to identify or measure it. A lot of people in the Middle Ages who have studied natural philosophy sought to identify and liberate aether or quintessence. They left only intricate texts and questionable evidence, so we don't know exactly what they knew. But just one thing - aether is everywhere, in every grain of matter, in every photograph.

studiowinkler is a fashion label based in Berlin, Germany, founded by Zurich-born designer Julia Winkler. Winkler graduated with distinction from Berlin‘s International University of Art for Fashion (ESMOD) in 2012, with a Diploma in Fashion Design and Pattern-Making. Her approach to design is reputed for its experimentalism.
"Behind every studiowinkler collection lies a library of references: though their outlines are abstract and bent out of shape beyond recognition, the aura of each still lingers. The influences are so cleverly entwined that little lucid links shine forth (and that‘s the magic of Winkler's trick). Typically, it is not an easy analysis but the work is so much the better for it. It is the kind of poetic precision that makes Winkler an auteur amogst designers. Abstruse as her influences persist to be, they certainly make for a captivating read." (Rebekka Ayres about studiowinkler in Zoo Magazine No. 47-2015).
